SBI Funds’ $1.2B IPO plans signal strong global demand for Indian asset managers

India’s booming equity market has set the stage for a significant listing in 2026, as SBI Funds Management Ltd. prepares to tap investors in what could become one of the largest fund industry offerings in the country.

With plans to raise up to $1.2 billion, as per a Bloomberg exclusive, the asset manager is positioning itself for a valuation that could touch $12 billion, according to people close to the matter.

The development reflects a broader trend where India’s investment management sector is drawing global capital interest, amid rising assets under management and retail participation.

IPO process begins with bank mandate pitches

SBI Funds Management, the largest asset manager in India, is expected to begin shortlisting banks in the coming weeks to handle the IPO.

Multiple banks are likely to be invited to pitch for advisory and underwriting roles for the offering in Mumbai, slated for the first half of 2026.

The listing plan comes as part of a broader ownership strategy by its parent institutions, State Bank of India Ltd. and Amundi SA. The two shareholders are planning to divest a combined 10% stake through the IPO.

While the companies have not issued public comments, sources confirm internal discussions are ongoing. These details remain subject to change as market conditions evolve closer to the launch window.

Asset manager targets $12 billion valuation

If finalised at the expected scale, the IPO could raise $1.2 billion, aligning SBI Funds with some of India’s most valuable listed financial entities.

The proposed valuation of $12 billion reflects the company’s dominant position in the mutual fund landscape, where it manages a wide range of equity, debt, and hybrid schemes for millions of investors.

SBI Funds’ market-leading role is backed by its joint ownership: State Bank of India, the country’s largest lender by assets, and Amundi, one of Europe’s largest asset managers.

This international backing is expected to appeal to both domestic and global institutional investors as they look to expand exposure to India’s growing financial services sector.

Recent listings have reinforced the market’s capacity for absorbing large offerings. LG India’s strong debut, which drew robust investor interest in October, has been a key example of this momentum in Mumbai’s record-breaking IPO cycle.

India’s IPO momentum sustains interest

SBI Funds’ listing plans emerge against the backdrop of a strong IPO cycle in India.

The country has raised nearly $18 billion through public listings so far this year, driven by sizeable offerings such as Tata Capital Ltd.’s $1.7 billion IPO.

That brings the market close to matching the $21 billion raised in all of 2022, according to Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, fintech firm Pine Labs’ 39 billion rupees offer launched around 7 November has further energised the market, demonstrating demand for digital-first platforms within the IPO space.

This continued activity suggests sustained investor confidence and bodes well for a financial-sector listing of SBI Funds’ magnitude.

The appetite for regulated, revenue-generating businesses in the investment management space has been growing, supported by demographic tailwinds and expanding retail savings in equities.

Ownership structure remains unchanged for now

Though Amundi and SBI are planning to divest a portion of their holdings, the majority stake in SBI Funds will remain unchanged after the IPO.

Amundi and SBI have not commented publicly on the matter, and neither has SBI Funds Management.

Nevertheless, the transparency offered by a public listing is likely to add further credibility and investor interest to the company’s future.

The listing also aligns with broader industry patterns, where joint ventures between domestic banks and international asset managers are increasingly seeking public markets to unlock value.

This trend is particularly visible in India, where regulatory frameworks and growing investor bases are creating favourable conditions for capital market access.
